This page will show you the most important things not to get wrong. This is primarily taken from the book 'Web Page Design in easy steps' by Brian Austin (Although he had 14!!)
- A true domain name is essential (www.cleverwebsites.co.uk not www.geocities.com/anotherwebsite)
- Pages must be fast to load (more than 30 secs on a 56kbp/s is too much and even that is pushing it)
- First Impressions count
- Think what a visitor wants from you not vice-versa (They don't like unnecessary information and over blown sales messages, they want to find what they want and not be unnecessarily diverted and they HATE!!!! pop-ups)
- Don't provide too many choices (this makes it harder to navigate, people will give up and go elsewhere)
- Aim to make your web pages attractive
- Focus design elements towards your captive audience (Is it Children, Industry experts, shoppers etc)
- Be very careful with Scrolling (Visitors are not overly keen on scrolling down although they will but they hate scrolling left and right - you must remember that different users use different screen sizes, keep images a reasonable size and seperate content out over several pages if necessary).
- Design your site with a Call To Action (This might be to make a sale, get an email address, get them to phone you or bookmark your site).
- 3 reasons to leave a site
- Boring Content, Lies or Hype - Pages taking too long too load - Confusing layout
- Your website will NEVER be right but know when to be happy with what you got.
